Wealth, Power, & Privilege: the Colbert's & the Chickasaw Nation
This research examines the Colbert family's rise to influence within the Chickasaw Nation, exploring how they balanced assimilation of European practices like patrilineal inheritance and chattel slavery with traditional Chickasaw values. It highlights their role in navigating key historical events, including removal, the Civil War, and Reconstruction, and their impact on tribal sovereignty.
The paper also sheds light on the experiences of Chickasaw Freedmen, emphasizing the racial and political complexities that continue to shape the nation today.

This project explores the stories of Black homesteaders in Oklahoma, focusing on their pursuit of land ownership and community-building in the face of systemic racism and exclusion. By examining archival records, oral histories, and land patents, the research highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of these pioneers as they navigated Reconstruction, westward expansion, and the challenges of statehood. The work seeks to preserve and amplify the voices of these individuals, contributing to a broader understanding of Black contributions to Oklahoma's history.
