HERstory
Born in Oklahoma City and raised in Galveston, Texas, Patricia "Missy" Washington journey is rooted in a lifelong passion for history, creativity, and education. She attended Westchester Academy for International Studies in Houston, Texas, which greatly shaped her worldview and dedication to obtaining knowledge about the world beyond her neighborhood. After returning to Norman, Oklahoma during high school, she pursued her love of storytelling and academic inquiry, earning a Bachelor’s in History and now completing a Master’s in Museum Studies at the University of Oklahoma as a third generation Sooner. She plans to pursue a Doctorate Degree in History upon completion of her Master's program.
A recipient of the prestigious William H. Maehl Jr. Fellowship for Historical Writing and a proud member of the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society, Missy’s academic achievements underscore her dedication to preserving and sharing compelling narratives. As a Research Assistant for the Oklahoma Black Homesteader Project, she uncovers and archives histories that amplify marginalized voices.
Her creativity extends beyond research. As founder of Sink the Ships Design Co. and a graphic designer for The Listening Project, Missy uses visual storytelling to connect people with ideas, inspire advocacy, and promote social change. In the classroom, she thrives as a special education teacher, fostering inclusivity and adapting lessons to support diverse learners.
Through her work in education, research, and design, Missy blends history and innovation, ensuring the stories she tells today inspire a more equitable and creative tomorrow.
